House Joint Resolution No. 358

By Representative Head

A Resolution to designate October as "Native American Indian Month" in Tennessee

Whereas, there are over 10,000 Native American Indians who are citizens of the great state of Tennessee; and

Whereas, Native American Indians were the first residents of the state of Tennessee;

Whereas, Native American Indians have made advances in the growth and development of the United States, the state of Tennessee, and their local communities, first through history and now through human and natural resources; and

Whereas, Native American Indians have made significant contributions and will continue to make contributions to the development of business, industry, education, the arts, and other areas which have made this country and this state a good place in which to live; and

Whereas, many of these contributions made by Native American Indians are unknown and unrecognized by many Tennesseans; now therefore,

Be It Resolved BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE, THE SENATE CONCURRING,

That October is hereby designated as "Native American Indian Month" in Tennessee.

Be It Further Resolved, That, during "Native American Indian Month", schools, clubs, and civic and religious organizations are encouraged to recognize the contributions of Native American Indians with suitable ceremonies and fellowship designed to promote greater understanding and brotherhood between Native American Indians and the other citizens of the state of Tennessee.

Be It Further Resolved, That the State Department of Education and the Commission of Indian Affairs shall make, within the limits of funds available for such purpose, information available to all people of this state regarding Native American Indian Month and the observance thereof.
